Guide to Scooter Air Pollution Masks

Study found exposure to traffic pollutants can increase the risk of death by seven per cent

Most scooter riders rarely forget to wear their riding jackets or helmets since they know how important they are for their safety. However, one thing that they often overlook is wearing an antipollution mask when riding in heavy ciy traffic.  Very few riders wear an anti pollution mask despite research establishing the link between long term exposure to air pollution and higher rates of heart and lung diseases.

A major study by Dr Rob Beelen from Utrecht University in the Netherlands found exposure to traffic pollutants can increase the risk of death by seven per cent.  In another study by Canadian researchers, cyclists in Ottawa, Ontario, had heart irregularities in the hours after their exposure to a variety of air pollutants on busy roads.

WHO estimate that air pollution contributes to three million deaths annually.

Generally speaking, the greatest inhalation of undesirable exhaust fumes happens when you’re sitting in traffic.  If having your face covered while riding in dense city traffic is not an option, navigating your ride to the front of the line will help reduce  your exposure by staying out of the exhaust clouds.
